There are many ways to start a build up to a song, alot of rock bands will start with just a simple drum beat, then add instruments when you can.
Others dont even have a buildup, some songs just start off hard and loud.

as for the EQ a general rule that i use to make something sound right is set all your frequencies as low as they go and then start with treble, turning it up untill it sounds good, then the middle frequency, and then bass.

Synths (if you cant make them) can be bought from many people, i prefer Sony just because they are a trusted brand name that i have used for ever.
but it is always nice to pick up a synth keyboard for custom sounds and tunes.
